As I’m sure you’ve already heard through the intervine, Pavement is reuniting after a decade of splitsville. In fact, the first confirmed date in the tour is in Central Park September 21, 2010, exactly one year from today. Indie kids, set your calculator watches to count down 365 days starting…now. Four dates in NY are already confirmed for next September, and the web presale for the first date sold out in two minutes. Wowee Zowee, indeed. Camp out in front of your computer and good luck grabbing a ticket when they go on sale this Friday at 10 a.m.
While we only have four dates so far, Brooklyn Vegan has speculated that Stephen Malkmus and Co. may sign up for a longer tour, and Scott Kannberg told Rolling Stone they’re “talking to” Coachella. I hope this isn’t wishful thinking, because if they don’t add more dates and locations, New York is going to be flooded with every single aging indie rocker from across the country. And that is dangerous. When Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks played in Denver last year, the 40-year-old man behind me yelled “STEPHEN! FUCKING JICKS! WOOO! STEPHEN!” throughout the entire set. Do we really want all of these people simultaneously in one city? Please, Pavement, consider the strain on New York’s dive bars.
This is happy, happy news. One-third of my Trifecta of Indie Dreams is officially confirmed. Now all I have to do is resurrect Ian Curtis and wait for Jeff Mangum to come out of his cave and I will be complete.
