mtsthelens

I forgot about this until just today, both luckily and thankfully because I really wanted to see Mt St Helens Vietnam Band the last time they were at the Hi-Dive and missed it. Needless to say, this won’t happen again. But I’m glad I didn’t wait any longer to think about this because, well… it’s tomorrow.

Mt St Helens Vietnam Band @ the Hi-Dive
Wed, June 17th
21+ $8.00

*Note: Paper Bird Cd Release on June 24th at the Hi-Dive, but more on that later…

VIDEO BIT BANGER
CHRIS » 06.14.09 03:44PM

huoratron

This video was released over a year ago, so I’d probably post it under the “Old Sh*t” column if we had one, but we don’t, so don’t hate. It’s a video by the Finnish artist Aku Raski, better known as Huoratron. His music is usually classified under 8-bit, but really it’s a mix of 8-bit glitches and electroclash.  The song, $$ Troopers, is great in itself, but what’s even more impressive is the video (warning: scathing and pretentious social editorial after the break).

THIS PHOENIX WON’T TURN TO ASH
JOSH » 06.09.09 05:26PM

phoenix

Get excited peeps-the new Phoenix album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, is outstanding and great summer listening.  Even better is the fact that they are now headlining at the Bluebird in Denver June 25th after dropping off from the Metric show (which also promises to be good-at the Ogden June 11th).  Even better than better is that they’ll be performing at Monolith 9/12-13.  Some of you may even be lucky enough to check them out at Bonnaroo this weekend, but for those who aren’t braving the Tennessee June, check out this live track and this remix to get you in the mood.

PRETTY PERFECT. REALLY, THOUGH.

grizzly_bear_daughters

Having posted the fan video for Grizzly Bear‘s Two Weeks some time back, it seems only fair to post the real deal. Directed by Patrick Daughters, it’s no surprise that each of the video’s 250 seconds is loaded with intrigue despite the subtlety of the entire thing. Behind the artistry of Department of Eagles No One Does it Like You and the award winning video for Feist’s 1234, Daughters uses the first single from Grizzly Bear’s Veckatimest as an aural backdrop to exhibit another effective weapon in his arsenal of visual styles.

+1 DAY FOR TRACK 7
BRAD » 06.04.09 09:51AM

ti-mixtape

When T.I. made the documentary series Road To Redemption for MTV, it came off as a respectable and legitimate attempt at doing some good before he spent 366 days in jail for weapons charges. Throughout the series, T.I. intervened in the lives of adrift youth, using his own story as an example of how one could achieve both great success (multiplatinum albums, American Gangster, somehow sampling the “Numa Numa” song effectively) and great troubles (machine guns and silencers are generally frowned upon in countries not ruled by the Taliban). It was nice and for a few fleeeting moments, it almost seemed like the judge might see Road To Redemption as reason to be a little lenient on our boy T.I.P.

But the judge must have received an advance copy of A Year And A Day, T.I.’s great pre-prison mixtape. There are totally songs about killing people here.

ONE RIPE PEACH
NICHOLE » 06.02.09 11:43AM

Peaches_1

Last night I started off June right by seeing Peaches at the Showbox in downtown Seattle. I was first introduced to Peaches by my old roomie and best bud Leigh-Ann a couple years ago, and fell in love with her dirty lyrics and her unique sound–ranging from electro to hip hop to hard rock. I can confidently say that her performance made my top 5 list as soon as she walked out on stage. Her voice was incredible, her smoking hot backing band, Sweet Machine, was unreal, and her costumes were all around epic.

THE 2001 COMEBACK
BRAD » 06.02.09 10:00AM

eminem_jay-z

This is how it starts. And, frankly, it’s okay by me. Here are two of the decade’s greatest rappers performing one of the decade’s greatest rap songs from what is probably the decade’s greatest rap album. It’s Jay-Z and Eminem, folks, performing “Renegade” last night or sometime recently. It’s low-quality in both sound and video, but it’s steeped in turn-of-the-millennium awesomeness. Video after the jump. Thanks, Ye.

SHIT IS MAJOR
AUSTIN » 06.01.09 11:20PM

major_lazer_2

There’s a lot going on in Major Lazer‘s new single Hold the Line. Think western bass-lines overlayed with the Hawaii 5-0 intro bridging into a tasteful version of Sean Paul alongside Santigold peppered with weird horse SFX. For added confusion, the music video is an amalgamation of G.I. Joe and He-Man injected with snippets of  Evil Mike Tyson drooling, proving to be a bigger hodgepodge than the ruins of Making the Band 3.

HIGH CLASS MC PLUS FASHIONISTA
JOSH » 06.01.09 11:59AM

tiye_phoenix

Tiye Phoenix is reminiscent of Brooklyn emcees Talib and Mos Def, which is probably the best compliment that can be given to a rapper.  Socially conscious, extremely smart and clever, and butter smooth production make this an outstanding summer joint.  On Half Woman Half Amazin’ she proves that she can easily step to the big boys and rap their sorry asses off the stage.

VIP…WTF?
NICHOLE » 05.31.09 09:33PM

WaMuTheater

I for one am not the type to pass up anything free, especially free tickets to a show, even if it is for USC 12 with The Prodigy headlining. So last night myself and my roommate/colleague/friend Lauren hit up the WaMu Theater to see not only The Prodigy, but Crystal Method, and Kaskade. After visiting 3 different tables, and finally finding out that we were on The Prodigy Band List, we received VIP access for the entire evening. Not too shabby for some free tickets to bands I hadn’t listened to in 10ish years.
