SPEND THE WEEKEND WITH HEALTH
JOSH » 08.18.09 11:03PM
My favorite noise-core dance band, and Monolith mid-liner, HEALTH, has given me one more reason to love them.  In addition to their extensive participation in the ‘remix-economy’ (HEALTH//DISCO, an album of remixes of tracks from their self-titled debut was in my top 5 2008 albums), they have announced a wonderful Willy Wonka-esque ticket promotion for those purchasing their album.  Prizes and tracks after the jump.
The grand prize is a weekend in LA chillin’ and illin’ with the members of HEALTH, including such desirables as bunking with the band, a zoo excursion, and a trip to the amusement park.  However, I personally hope to win a ticket on the turquoise level-which is to say, a screen print or LP test pressing autographed in their blood.  Can you say limited edition?  A weekend comes and goes, but blood lasts (er..stains) a lifetime.  The fact that I was going to purchase their new LP was a forgone conclusion, the fact that it could also result in me getting drunk with HEALTH on video chat while doing arts and crafts or receiving a historical themed phone call from the band ups it to a whole ‘nother level.  Full prize list here, via stereogum.  New album, Get Color, drops on 9/8.

TWO MORE WEEKS

twoweeks

I’m not usually a proponent of fan-made videos. They are often poorly produced and conceptually barren. The worst offenders are of such low overall quality I’d rather see the band break up than be subject to another one of these YouTube anime shit-sterpieces.

However, and this is a big however, Gabe Askew’s take on Grizzly Bear’s Two Weeks is a stunning, inspired, visual and emotional rollercoaster, no pun intended, that gives the original video a run for its money. Video after the break.

DEATH FROM AUSTRALIA
JOSH » 08.13.09 11:21PM
Gotta love the folks at dfa. They’ve been releasing single after outstanding single recently, and their newest drop is no exception.  This time its showcasing Australia’s Canyons (as a band, not a geological formation).  Fire Eyes has a nice quick beat and a heavily affected keyboard.  The music and the vocals have a cosmic tribal quality; a good listen.  Also worth checking out is Big City Lights, which takes you on a nice and quiet stroll with some very organic sounding woodwinds.
Actually, I’m pretty much loving everything on their myspace page (Canyons Drunken Rage remix, so good).  Canyon’s full length will be put out by the fine folks at Modular whom you may remember from Cut Copy, Wolfmother, and the Presets. Modular really has a super strong roster, check that out too.

THE DEAD WEATHER

deadweather

(This is long overdue and should’ve been posted a month ago. Sorry for that, summer’s been full of distractions.)

Last month The Dead Weather released their album, Horehound, and then the music video to Treat Me Like Your Mother, directed by Jonathan Glazer. Since the release, I’ve heard quite a few people talking about it. Some love it while some aren’t to sure how they feel about it. The album is interesting and different from what you would expect from the likes of Alison Mosshart and Jack White, and I think this is what’s keeping people talking. It’s got a dark blues rock sound that’s unlike anything else, but with hints of their earlier bands.

ITS QUITE THE VIRILE HORSE
JOSH » 08.06.09 10:17PM

horsemeatdisco

Phoenix who? Kid Cudi what?  All of these have been placed on the back burner once I downloaded the latest comp from Horse Meat Disco.  Upbeat is the operative word here and this selection of nu-disco tracks makes you feel so good that sources say the Orange Juice industry is shaking in its boots.  First, check out Disco Jam by Eddie Drennon, a cowbell infused feel good sing-a-long.  Next, I’d recommend Plaza’s (Got My) Dancing Shoes.  It sounds like them music you might be listening to if your cabaret singer suddenly ripped off her clothes and strutted around the stage like a coke fueled fembot.  That would be amazing, and so is this album.  Digital out now, vinyl drops 9/1.  Even if you don’t like disco, check this summer album out.

I FUCKING HATE COLDPLAY

coldplay

But I fucking LOVE Shynola, the beautiful people behind great videos for Junior Senior, Queens of the Stone Age, and Beck. This Coldplay song doesn’t really do anything for me, but the video (after the break) is pretty spectacular.

LIGHTNESS! DARKNESS! DURATION!

Well Yacht’s ‘Mystery Lights’ dropped Tuesday off the DFA label, and-no surprises here-its really good.  Cowbells, handclaps, synths, and electronic raindrops await the brave souls who venture to the links below.  Much of the stuff on the LP has been around for a bit, but every day the world got to listen to I’m In Love With a Ripper or Its Boring/You Can Live Anywhere You Want was a day that much closer to something really good.  They also have a great site that includes their manifesto (Yacht is not a cult) and a bunch of free remixes, including a really fun Architecture in Helsinki remix of Do the Whirlwind.

Regina.Spektor-2004

Regina Spektor. Even if this woman had an extra arm growing out her face I would still marry her in a heartbeat. Oh, and she just released a new album. far, her first release in three years, came out yesterday and has been playing in my ears nonstop. It follows in the same vein as her previous albums, poppy, anti-folk piano with her incredible vocals and quirky writing style.

DISCOVER SCARY-GOOD MUSIC

ghostly10year

Ghostly International, celebrating their 10th anniversary this year, is a wonderful label based out of Ann Arbor, Michigan.  They center around electronic music, ranging from house to techno, and their output ranges from fast and thumping to downtempo and chill.  One of the best ways to explore any label is through the comps they release, such as Ghostly’s far-ranging Idol Tryouts series.  However, for Ghostly, that all changed yesterday, when they introduced a great app for the iPhone, Ghostly Discovery.

RATATUDI

cudi_ratatat

Because I am terribly uncool, the vast majority of my Twitter friends aren’t friends at all, but rather celebrities, “celebrities,” and an assortment of… You know what? Nevermind. One of my eBFFs is Kid Cudi, rapper, OurHype favorite, and epic tweeter. Seriously, epic. He tweets way too fucking much. But every now and then, there are some tasty nuglets of information dropped within his 140 characters. Take, for instance, the fact that he’s recording an album with Ratatat.

Hipsters: arm yourselves with your entitled opinions, because this shit is going to be polarizing!

OH FUCK YOU KID

fantastadon

Enter Fantastadon. He’s a producer from Boston that has worked pretty closely with the likes of Hot Pink Delorian and just recently started releasing tons of work. I got exposed to his track “Fantastadonculous” a couple of months ago and started to tear up at about the minute mark. Now his tracks find their way into every mix I make. So why the “fuck you?” Because he’s only twenty. Two. Zero…years. And he farts banger tracks. Sigh, links after the break.

A SAVOY UPDATE

savoyshow1

The guys of Savoy are definitely doing some big things right now. They just finished a mini tour on the east coast, and are now tearing up the west coast. They are actually playing tonight at the Elbo Room in San Francisco, with Lazer Sword, and are then coming up my way to play this Friday at Emrg+n+see.
