UFFIE FINALLY POPPED THE GLOCK
NICHOLE » 10.04.09 11:27PM

PoptheGlockVid

And it’s about time. Ed Rec released the ‘Pop the Glock’ music video last Friday and a pretty good video it is. Directed by Nathalie Canguilhem of French production company SOIXAN7E QUIN5E (who reps some pretty awesome directors and producers) and animated/designed by LA’s Laundry!, the video is the usual Ed Banger party combined with some fun collage-like 80s style animation. There was talk on Le Cool Cats Blog about re-releasing the classic ‘Pop the Glock’ “just to remind us how good it was,” however, the EP to be released will include remixes from DJ Mehdi, Ellen Allien, and one of my favorites, Mirwais. Listen to the Mirwais remix on Hype Machine. There is also talk of a brand new Uffie single featuring Pharrell coming out soon along with a first ever Uffiie’s album titled Sex Dreams and Denim Jeans which will be out early next year.

THE PHOENIX RISES AGAIN
JOSH » 10.01.09 01:51PM

Animal+Collective+animal22

Sometimes i wait a bit too long sharing music.  i’ll get excited about something and listen to it a bunch, but soon enough it is simply another track on the <30 day playlist.  Not this time.  Animal Collective remixing Phoenix’s Love is a Sunset, as good as you’re thinking.  Its a beautifully layered and nuanced track that crescendos up and humbly whispers away.

HIPSTER KIDS INC.

And here we go. The Where the Wild Things Are soundtrack (by Karen O and the Kids) is out and boy is it annoying. But that’s only because pretty much every songs features kids. A lot of them. Yelling. Like, a lot (see “All Is Love”). The Karen O parts are actually a little awesome (see “Worried Shoes”). Then again, there’s the kids (see “All Is Love”). Fuck, I don’t know. Judge for yourself. Rumpus after the jump.

SYNTHS, DUCK HUNT, AND WHITNEY HOUSTON
JOSH » 09.24.09 10:02AM
Hudson Mohawke first came into my view with the 7X7 beat series put out by the All City Dublin label.  The 7X7 was a beautiful thing-7 singles released by 7 up and coming electronic and beats artists, at least one diamond, polished or un, upon each single.
But Hudson Mohawke stood out beyond the rest.  Star Crackout was a beautiful track featuring a looping syncopated piano under a reverent sounding soprano.  Root Hands sounds like its in the middle of disintegrating and the final track, Everybody Else is Wrong, sounds like some indigenous tribe got a hold of Mr. Mohawke’s beat pad.
So why am I telling you all of this.  Well the fine folks at Warp Label know talent when they see it (Aphex Twin, Burial, Grizzly Bear) and they have decided that we should be so blessed with a proper Hudson Mohawke release, titled Butter, available 10/12 (digi then, vinyl available on preorder).  Check out Hudson’s teaser sampler, which is straight up the bomb.  Get pumped.

fuck buttons - Surf Solar

Noise/Post Rock band Fuck Buttons just dropped their first single, Surf Solar, from their upcoming album Tarot.  Surf Solar features a wailing guitar ripping through a churning river of feedback. I love the video because this is when you find out that what you’re actually listening to are screaming penguins, and the churning river of feedback is actually Vegas.  Video after the jump.

As I’m sure you’ve already heard through the intervine, Pavement is reuniting after a decade of splitsville. In fact, the first confirmed date in the tour is in Central Park September 21, 2010, exactly one year from today. Wowee Zowee, indeed. Camp out in front of your computer and good luck grabbing a ticket when they go on sale this Friday at 10 a.m.

THE CHEF IS COOKIN’
JOSH » 09.19.09 07:28PM
Raekwon’s ‘Only Built for Cuban Linx PT II’ came out last week.  Referencing his seminal album, early leaks ‘Hose of Flying Daggers’ and ‘Surgical Gloves’ only continued to build hype and anticipation.  And it delivers.  Its dense, at 70 minutes, its one of those albums where you want to rush through it, just so you can listen to it again.  There are many excellent tracks to be heard here, Cold Outside, Ason Jones, 10 Bricks, the list goes on.
Roster is great: Busta Rhymes, Ghostface, Inspectah Deck, RZA, Method Man, Killer Mike, and Slick Rick and awesome production from Dre, Dilla, RZA.  Check this album out.  Digi out now, vinyl unannounced.

YACHT IS NOT A CULT

YACHT

But with their new music video for Psychic City (Voodoo City), they’ve harnessed the power to command some serious attention.

Founded on one of the most poppy, upbeat singles of the year, Psychic City juxtaposes dark and light, religion and occult, serious and obscene. The use of hi-def cameras to document their antics solidifies the collocation. With vivid color contrasts and sharp focus, we explore two ends of the spectrum brought to life by Jona Bechtolt and bandmate Claire Evans.

THE VERY, VERY GOOD
BRAD » 08.31.09 06:38PM

the very best front

Still suffering from Slumdog Millionaire-induced world music PTSD? Me too. What a shitty movie.

But it’s okay, as The Very Best is, well, the very best cure for that “Jai Ho” bullshit. A collaboration between Malawi native Esau Mwamwaya and production duo Radioclit, The Very Best’s MySpace boils their style neatly down to Tropical Melodramatic Popular Showtunes. If the word “Zazu” comes to mind, you’re not exactly wrong. But you’re not exactly right, either. It’s really, really good! “Just Can’t Wait To Be King” good!

SOMEONE COULD MAKE THIS DISCO AS SHIT
CHRIS » 08.27.09 01:29AM

shakira

So I’m up at two in the morning…the only time MTV ever plays videos. Oh look, Shakira is back apparently. She’s got a new video. I saw some buzz, some pictures. Up until now, I don’t care. Don’t care, that is, until my roomate yells “Someone could make this disco as shit!” I look it up, and sure enough, two days ago, Calvin Harris made it disco as shit. Enjoy.

TECH-NO? TECH-YES!
JOSH » 08.23.09 09:41PM

kompaktspeicher.jpg

Techno can be a pretty intimidating genre.  I mean, what is techno anyways?  Is techno electronic?  Is techno dance?  Is techno club?  A reliable voice of reason amongst all the confusion is the Kompakt label.  They’ve been around for 11 years and in that time have fostered a world-class roster stretching from Germany to Brazil to Japan.  For ten years they’ve been releasing their annual Total compilation.

This year’s Total 10 (digi out now, vinyl on import) features tracks from The Field, Thomas/Mayer, and the insanely beautiful track ‘Heart’s A Mess (Supermayer remix)’ by Gotye.  Pitchfork also has a neat interview with label founder Michael Mayer which includes an exclusive (and free mix).  So, be brave, venture forth, and discover some techno.
