ONE MORE REASON I LOVE YOU ADULT SWIM
JOSH » 12.22.09 09:56PM

adult-swim-and-beatorator-present-atl-rmx

Oh Adult Swim, we met in college and you continue to be my friend in adulthood, a gentle yoke around my neck preventing me from ever growing up.  You furthered my dependency with great web presence, collabs with Stone’s Throw, and producing DangerDoom.  Can I ever free myself from you?  Certainly not when you (and Beaterator) put out things like your ATL RMX tape featuring artists like HEALTH, Hudson Mohawke, and EL-P remixing Dirty South rappers like Gucci Mane, Young Jeezy, and Lil Jon.  No matter what, I’ll always come back to you Adult Swim, no matter what.  Now if you could only give me an iPhone interface.

TEN LONG YEARS

pixeltan

Yes, yes, YES!  Pixeltan, the bass heavy, squealing lyric sound from New York City has finally dropped a new EP, after ten long years.  I can’t even post one of their new tracks yet (not on hype machine, not even on their myspace) but by God can I order their LP, and order their LP I did-about 30 seconds after receiving notice it was out.  DFA is a label that always has some stellar offerings and Pixeltan promises to live up to this grand tradition, which, by the way, is now officially 100 albums strong.  I’ll post music as soon as I can, but honestly, Pixeltan is a band that I will blindly order.  This promises to be good, no not good, amazing.

Cover

I know it’s been a while since I’ve written about Savoy, but believe me, there have been plenty of other writers and bloggers out there doing it for me. Late last month, Savoy released their debut album Automatic at a sold out Fox Theater release party in Boulder. The album is insane. You can download it for free on Savoy’s website. These guys are selling out shows left and right all over Colorado, and getting crazy buzz on blogs like Hype Machine, Noise Porn, Trashbag Kids, and Kill Me Curious. I’m really excited to be doing work with these guys, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for them next year. All I know, is they better get their asses to Seattle.

amblingalp

Taking a page out of Ryan McGinley’s nudie playbook, Yeasayer has created a website for their single Ambling Alp that features naked people running. Instead of merely jocking McGinley’s style, Yeasayer’s website takes it one step further, allowing for user interactivity via yellowBird 3D video technology. So if you’ve ever dreamed of running sans pants in the music video for Gobbledigook, the time is now. Head over to Ambling Alp. And, while you’re at it, check out the new single by the same name.

contra-cover

Cousins is the latest track to pop-up from Vampire Weekend‘s upcoming release Contra. Foregoing the summer-island melodies of the first preview single, Horchata, this new track is fast-paced and noisy – familiar territory for fans of the first album. In fact, it feels almost like A-Punk mashed together with any number of Minutemen tracks off their seminal album Double Nickels On The Dime. Trust me, that’s a good thing. Listen to the track over at Hype Machine.

HEY, THE EDGE CALLED, HE WANTS HIS GUITAR BACK
JOSH » 11.16.09 03:23PM
You probably remember Echo and the Bunnymen from the song ‘Lips Like Sugar’.  Thats their most successful single in the US, and it came out in 1987.  Or maybe you know ‘The Killing Moon,’ their second must successful US single, which came out in 1984.  Thats 25 years ago.  So you can understand why I was like ‘gwah!?!’ when I heard ‘Think I Need it Too,’ released in 2009, which shreds across a symphonic 3 and a half minute arc.  Its basically the best U2 song since ‘Walk On’.  I totally want to play this on RockBand.

DO YOU HEAR WHAT I HEAR?

DOG-AND-OWL-6

Do you hear that sound?  Its the soundtrack to a generation of tweens losing their dry hump virginity, otherwise known as Fireflies by Owl City.  Owl City is not a ripoff of the Postal Service, as ‘ripoff’ implies separation.  Rather Owl City is more like a deformed conjoined twin of the Postal Service, just barely surviving off the heart of his more robust brother (omg-did i just write Owl City’s next single).  Either way, to help you be fully armed to hate Owl City, here is a quiz for you (after the jump).
Which of these is not a lyric from Fireflies?
a) cause i’d get a thousand hugs/from ten thousand lightning bugs
b) a fox trot above my head/a sock hop beneath my bed
c) to ten million fireflies/i’m weird cause i hate goodbyes
d) and when i begin to dream/things aren’t what they seem
What was Adam Young’s response in a recent interview to a question discussing similarities with the Postal Service?
a) “I’m completely indebted to the Postal Service in terms of my sound, my vocal delivery, and my lyrics.  Only I’m not as good.”
b) “It’s kind of ironic, looking back at it, because a lot of people do relate the two projects.  I can totally see it now, but I didn’t really then, for what its worth”
c) “I’ve never heard the Postal Service, everyone mentions this.  I really need to get their album”
d) “I respect the Postal Service and think they did incredible things, however I truly believe that Owl City is a very separate and distinct sound.  I understand why people would like both of our work, but we really are each unique in our own way”
In a recent interview, what was the motivation behind Taylor Swift’s infatuation with Owl City?
a) She thinks owls are cute
b) His emotions are so real
c) It sounds like nothing she’s ever heard before
d) He writes the songs she always tries to write
Which of these tweets did Owl City not actually tweet?
a) “Welcome to the church of vegetables. Lettuce pray”
b) “I need you like the dragonfly’s wings need the wind”
c) “My heart starts aiken when Clay starts singing”
d) “I just did a ton of coke off the strippers ass..FFFFFFUCCKKED UPppp”d

Do you hear that sound?  Its the soundtrack to a generation of tweens losing their dry hump virginity, otherwise known as Fireflies by Owl City.  Owl City is not a ripoff of the Postal Service, as ‘ripoff’ implies separation.  Rather Owl City is more like the ramora lazily living off the lagress of its host shark, incapable of living on its own (omg!-did i just write the next hit owl city single?)  To further encourage your anti-Owl City sentiment (and seriously, are you listening to this song?), here’s a quiz for you (after the jump).

THEY WILL CONVERT YOU

evangelicals

Here’s a great way for me to fall in love with your band.  Open your show with a Bowie cover, rock the stage with an uber-epic baby of Rapture and CYHSY, and finish off with an Echo and Bunnymen cover (it doesn’t hurt that you’re adorable too).  Result: Josh, and the entire Hi-Dive, fall in love with you.  Yeah, here’s a couple links to Evangelicals’ songs, but none compare to their live show.  My only disappointment about this show is that it ended.  Check the tour schedule here to see if you’ll have the opportunity for the same.  Best 8 bucks you’ll spend this month, guaranteed.

ONE FOOT IN THE DJ POOL

audiotool

Fancy yourself an electro DJ in progress? Give it a shot with Audiotool from HobNox. Think of this as ToneMatrix on steroids. In fact, a fully functional ToneMatrix module is available as an instrument within the Audiotool. You start with your basic two-channel pre-amp. Then you load in other modules, many of which mimic the great tools of professional DJs. Of course, you can’t use these modules unless you wire them up, so Audiotool forces you to plug the output from one module into the pre-amp. Want more than one module? You’ll need a mixer. Want to filter your sound? Split off the audio and run it through an effects pedal. Trust me, you’ll want to play around with this. Check out a video of Audiotool in action after the break.

RODEO MASSACRE

rodeomassacre

I stumbled upon Rodeo Massacre, by means of Vimeo, when I was looking for some stop motion and pixilation videos. I fell in love with their music video for ‘The Game,’ and then quickly fell just as hard for the rest of their music. This UK, rock ‘n roll band is one to look into. They just release their first full album, Heartaches and Wonders, which is available on 7 inch vinyl. Want. Take a look at their video after the jump.

THEY ALSO HAVE GREAT SONG TITLES

falloutboyjayz

I’m going to put this out there right now: Fall Out Boy rocks.  Yes it is easy to hate them (that ‘lullabulah’ song was played a lot) but their lyrics are funny and literate and the music is insanely catchy.  I am beyond ironically liking them, I sincerely like them.  And I sincerely like their new single, Alpha Dog, released earlier this week.  Hate if you want but remember, they’re Roc-A-Fella.
