DOTS + LOOPS

You’ve probably seen Kevin Sprouls‘ work. He’s a stippler, which means he produces images with lines and dots of various sizes to create the illusion of shape and volume. It also means he does by hand what a computer can do in mere seconds. I don’t mean to belittle his work, though; dithering applications are incredibly unbiased, and produce images with no regard for the content. His images are incredibly detailed and filled with personality; the orientation of his dots and loops is very carefully thought-out and perfectly executed. And he does hundreds of them. Hundreds.

TEENS + TRANNIES
AUSTIN » 04.28.09 10:46PM

pair4_med

In his latest work, Charlie White has combined two demographics you wouldn’t ordinarily consider putting side by side (unless you work in the adult film industry). Teen and Transgender Comparative Studies has led me to the following conclusions:

  1. Teens are actually miniature transgendered individuals
  2. Transgendered people are actually overgrown, pubescent teenagers
  3. This is a before/after documentation of the swine flu

PEOPLE DOING STRANGE THINGS WITH ELECTRICITY

dorkbot2

This Friday in Denver Dorkbot will present People Doing Strange Things With Electricity a part of their Interactive Artist Series. Not content with just being a particularly cool grouping of nerds, they are also holding the Denver premiere screening of DJ Spooky’s Rebirth of a Nation, a controversial film in which the artist remixes and re-appropriates the white supremecist film Birth of a Nation.

WHO WANTS TO SEE A FRAY PROMO POSTER ANYWAY?
JOSH » 04.27.09 10:10PM

Well, maybe not our walls in particular, rather the walls on the streets of nyc, which frequently are host to non-sanctioned advertisements.  Jordan Seiler decided to do something about this-and organized a bunch of peeps to white wash these illegal billboards to provide a blank canvas for artists to go to town on.

Check out the etsy store MetzgerMogabAndMoats. They are based out of Boulder and are selling these very sweet handmade hanging planters made from hollowed-out lightbulbs. They have a couple designs and are planning on selling centerpieces soon, so keep an eye out.

THIS RESTAURANT WORKS BETTER
JOSH » 04.25.09 10:32PM

Here’s a nice little article from A List Apart titled In Defense of Eye Candy.  The thesis of this article is in design, making something pretty does more than make it appealing, it actually results in a more functional site, product, or object.  Many times we tend to treat visual appeal as something additional, the eye candy is simply something layered onto the functional framework.  But this paper argues, and research indicates, that eye candy actually enhances the function.  A finished design that is well thought out and executed actually does work better than a sloppy one.

LITTLEPIXEL

dig-your-own-hole

Often, I’m amazed by an idea that is both simple and really clever, at the same instance you’re so glad someone brought it into being while annoyed you didn’t think it up yourself.  Littlepixel has posted a flickr set of album covers reimagined as old books.  It translates over so well, and its such a great idea to use the consistency of the Penguin books format.

Serif Gothic. It’s different. It’s elegant. It’s modern and vintage at the same time. I wonder, however, is it just beginning? Or is it already over?

GREAT ARTISTS STEAL

I hope the old adage is true, because I plan to steal a whole bunch of this. Then again, it’s from Smashing, so I think stealing it, or at least referencing it, is the point.

JEALOUS MUCH?
SARAH » 04.21.09 11:24PM

oliviabee1

In response to Austin’s Young & Ambitious post: why are my favorite Flickr photographers pubescent? Olivia Bee (age 15) has a photostream that boasts the dreamy, ethereal stuff that you’d expect to find on an M83 album cover (not to mention the girl already looks like an indie darling). And I read a mini interview on Fecal Face with Will Govus in January and immediately fell in love with his foggy photos. The kid is only 17. Makes me wish I hadn’t spent my formative years writing bad poetry and playing Pokemon. View his Flickr here, and a couple photos after the jump.

YOUNG + AMBITIOUS
AUSTIN » 04.21.09 02:39PM

nirrimi_1

Whenever I see someone who is young, talented and more ambitious than myself, I get jealous. Since I’m not a complete dick, I don’t let my jealousy get in the way of appreciating all that comes with their untainted perception and overall enthusiasm. In Nirrimi‘s case, I certainly don’t hate her for being a completely legitimate fashion photographer at 16. I don’t dislike her for having aspirations of shooting for Vogue before she’s of legal age. And I most definitely do not loathe the fact that she’s probably going to be much more successful than me by the time she reaches my age. Not one bit.
