liquidswords

As I’ve already made clear I’m a sucker for giving musical artifacts a fresh context. So, thanks to tinyblip to pointing me towards the present iteration: the infamous Wu albums reimagined as cover art in the iconic style of Blue Note Records’ resident graphic designer Reid Miles.

MILDEY, YEAR ONE
WILL » 05.15.09 12:50PM

mildey_framed

Yesterday I completed and presented the Mildey print. It’s a one-off going away present for two very special people made up of some of the best inside jokes I’ve ever been privy to. So, no, you can’t have one.

18″ x 24″ two-tone vector graphics printed on a HP Z3100 with archival ink on high-quality archival paper. It’s supposed to last 100 years. I like the idea of this thing being around long after I’m dead. I’m very pleased with the way this turned out, and Mildey really loved it.

I must credit 123klan with the inspiration for this piece. Keep an eye out for bits and pieces of them scattered throughout the poster. (Don’t worry, guys, it’s not for sale.)

ARAKI IS NOT A VIDEO GAME
JOSH » 05.14.09 11:22AM

araki1

In actuality, Nobuyoshi Araki is a dirty old man.  He also happens to be a fantastic photographer, considered amongst the most accomplished and prolific in Japan, dead or alive.  His 1991 book Erotos brings focus to the hyper sexual in mostly unintended contexts, but he has a massive range of viewpoints represented across five decades of material.  Phaidon has released a couple overviews, though you’d be equally satisfied getting right to some of his more major works.  Here’s some pic to pique the interest.

CLOTHES ON

autumn

There’s some really interesting clothes on photography in the portfolio of wardrobe stylist Shirley Kurata. Her work includes styling for portraits of huge crush Zooey Deschanel and equally crushable hipster-starlets Emily Blunt and Jenny Lewis.

CLOTHES OFF

nathan

There’s some really interesting clothes off photography in the Flickr-folio of Nathan Appel. His work ranges from purely erotic to eerily captivating, but it’s all raw and all sexual. Call it strange or call it arousing, just don’t call it boring. You’ll need a Flickr account to view the decidedly adult material. If you don’t have one, here’s some incentive to get one.

SATAN’S CAMARO

Is fucking cool.

These aren’t digital prints either, everything Justin Strom and Lenore Thomas have been producing as the collaborative Satan’s Camaro involves actually smoking the paper and silk screening many different layers of color.

JUST LIKE A CIRCUS

Normally clowns are scary as shit. But sometimes, with a little Photoshopping, they’re really funny. Just like a good clown should be!

More GOP fun after the jump. Via Wonkette.

KEIICHI NITTA
NICHOLE » 05.06.09 12:38PM

Nitta_1

Take Terry Richardson, smash him down a few inches, lengthen his hair 20-30 inches, and somehow make him Japanese, and you’ll have a man that goes by the name of Keiichi Nitta. Nitta moved to New York to work as Terry Richardson’s assistant, and after 10 years learning everything he could in NYC, he moved back home to open his own studio based in Tokyo. As much as I love Terry’s rough and raw photography, Nitta is moving out from behind Terry’s lenses and developing his own expression and style, focusing more on color and fun. Maybe it’s a little Tokyo influence.

His photography is super stunning, and defiantly provacative. I’m sure that’s why he shoots for American Apparel, Hysteric Glamour, Billionaire Boys Club,

fpo

UnderConsideration, a network of design focused sites that includes Brand New, as launched FPO, a design blog for print only. The UnderConsideration pedigree guarantees only fresh, interesting, high-quality content, although the quantity of posts may leave something to be desired. Based on the first couple of posts it looks like FPO is going to dive deep into the details of each project, publishing figures on production cost, page count, number of colors, printing process, and more. It’s exciting to see this side of the print process, especially as someone who typically works only in the computer. Maybe I should add this one to the friends list?

PARANOIA IN STYLE!

surgicalmask1

I spent hours picking out my glasses, mainly because they are on my face.  If someone thinks of my face, they will think of my glasses and I was not about to have some crap on a metal frame ornament my eyes.  So it only makes sense that the people who are really not gonna let swine flu bring them down to put the same thought into this seasons hottest mouth accessory, the surgical mask.  Check out Yorido Yoshida’s beautifully designed and magically named masks.  Or check out Irina Blok’s funny (and charitable!) project.  Or how about this guy’s modern take of a classic.
