I grew up on games. While I’m always excited for what modern consoles are capable of, I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for the colorful 2D sprites of the 8-bit and 16-bit generations. Early Playstation games are often too muddy and horrible looking to play these days, even with the nostalgia factor, but it’s easy to go back to the creativity and color of games like The Legend of Zelda on NES, Sonic and Gunstar Heroes for Genesis, and Mario World and Megaman X for SNES.

That said, I can’t help but wonder what it would be like to play all of my favorite old-school games after a facelift from deviantART’s Orioto. He’s taken a bunch of classics and repainted them with a twist. These new directions seem like great angles to take for value-priced downloadable releases for PlaystationNetwork or XBOX Live. Heck, if you gave me a rehash of Castlevania X with a fresh, hand-done coat of oil-paint on it I’d pay full price!

BOTT SCARY ISN’T REALLY
JOSH » 06.09.09 05:57PM

puppets

I’m an optimist.  In fact, I have been described as pathologically optimistic-why view the glass as half empty when there’s still something in the glass?  I have a feeling that I might be in good company though, when I look through illustrator Bott Scary’s heavily patterned and refreshingly happy work.  What’s wrong with a lot of smiley faces?  Nothing.  How about a group of 70s era otter English professors?  You got it.  I crave to get my hands on his books, but may have to settle for someone else’s hands on it right here.

INDIE CRUSH

Brittanie Pendleton is a minx. You can see it in her gaze and the way she crooks her neck. She’ll break you down and build you back up again. I think.

The truth is, I have no idea what Ms. Pendleton is all about. I’d like to think she’s some sort of vixen, and there’s good reason to believe she’s just that, but I don’t want to be too presumptuous.

What I do know can be extracted from her distinct style of self portraits–a journey through a series of intimate moments between herself and her camera. In addition to her self-shot images, she documents her surroundings, stringing together a story about her aesthetic sensibilities and her acute exhibition of emotion.

FROM THE CAVERN CLUB TO BANGLADESH IN 2:35

beatles

For a career that really only spanned seven years or so, the range of styles and sounds The Beatles produced was incredibly varied. From their Brit-rock bubblegum origins to their experimental, transcendent Maharishi days, The Beatles seemed almost like an entirely new – yet equally awe-inspiring – band with each album they released.

Which makes it that much more impressive that this Pete Candeland directed video manages to cover it all in only two minutes and thirty five seconds.

STILL GLAD YOU’RE MY #1

obama

Not content to simply let him be the current symbol for the mutlitextual American Dream and leader of the free world, Lisa Jack-a classmate of Obama from Occidental College in L.A.-decides to hold an exhibition her photos of a freshman Obama, showing him to be way cooler than I was.  How can this be?  He didn’t even have blogs at this time.  Maybe his straw hat is magic…or that jazz cigarette…

YOUR COIF IS STICKING OUT

hair7

I’m grateful hair exists. Otherwise, things would get kind of messy. Like a bad sequel to Powder where Sean Patrick Flanery spreads his seed and lack of hair. Luckily, John Ryan Solis shares my appreciation for hair. So, hypothetically, if an army of Powder offspring were taking over the world, I could probably entrust Solis with the task of electrocuting those glabrous fools.

“DEAR DUSTIN CURTIS, FUCK YOU!”

Design-by-committee, I’m sorry to say, is just part of working with large clients. It’s uncanny how quickly a marketing team can rain shit all over a quality design.

That’s exactly what Dustin Curtis was told by a gentleman from the American Airlines web team.

IF YOU WANT TO PAINT THE COVER OF THE NEW YORKER, THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT
WILL » 05.28.09 10:35PM

cover_newyorker_190

It seems like the iPhone can do just about anything. With the right app you can fart on cue, you can flip a girl’s clothes right off, or you can put the reigns on your finances. When they say “there’s an app for that,” they really mean “there’s an app for that.”

Apparently, if you’re Jorge Colombo, you can even paint the cover of the New Yorker using nothing but an iPhone and the Brushes app. And some fingers.

EDREM IS SHIT BACKWARDS
JOSH » 05.28.09 05:11PM

edrumgooddope

You know how you doodle when you’re bored?  Most times these doodles turn out to be crappy spirals and stars, or maybe if you’re feeling particularly inspired you turn out a pair of boobs.  Well, the very silly folks at EDREM are way more talented than you and me.  Their black and white illustrations are like what Dick and Jane might have looked like if it was Rated X.  Enjoy.

SNOWBLINDED

Denver-based designer/art director Anthony Cozzi is a talented dude.

I first met him during his stint at tda as our interactive AD a few years ago. Since then his site has been refreshed a few times and the most current indexhibit-based collection features some of his highly stylized (think ISO50 meets Spacesick meets aeiko) giclée prints and his latest screenprint, Drop Sequence.

I LIKE BOOBS TOO

scheunemann_1

Since photos and videos of naked, and/or scantily clad women have been the most recent trend on OURHYPE I figured I would also contribute before I miss my chance. Diana Scheunemann is a photographer now based out of New York. She shoots for editorial, advertising, fashion and personal projects, all of which are super sensual. On her site you’ll find photos of celebs like Misha Barton and Katy Perry, and musical artists like LeTigre and t.A.T.u (yes!).

I WISH I WAS YOU RIGHT NOW

I’ve never been a woman. But if I were, I’d like to think I’d be something like Elkie Vanstiphout. She has a pretty compelling portfolio (read: lots of beautiful women) that’s a cross between a more tasteful Last Night’s Party and a more explicit version of LOOKBOOK. She’s responsible for one of my favorite images of late, You have given me away to other men, she’s from Austria (which automatically makes you legit), not to mention the fact that most of her photographs are self-portraits (read: Elkie Vanstiphout is attractive). Oh, and she’s also a musician. A really good musician.

So this is what envy feels like.
