PHOTOS TO WANT ON YOUR WALL

telletubby

Enter Sergey Maximishin a Russian born photographer who has a wonderful portfolio documenting post-soviet life in Russia, East Europe, and continental Asia, celebrating its massive diversity and rapid evolution.  His photos seem to act as studies in the absurd-frequently contrasting the somber with the silly, the hopeless with the ethereal.  He has a true gift for composition, snapping shots that seem to perfect to merely be incidental.  His website has many more examples of his work (thanks Sergy!), so I suggest you surf your little keister over there.

SO I’M ON A VIDEO KICK

VisualVid

Jan Schönwiesner, a German design student, recently finished his graduation film. No, I don’t know him, but I ran across his short and was really moved by his work. It is a pretty amazing visual music video about a man trapped in a dream. “His world, consisting of “plattenbauten” (buildings made with precast concrete slabs) begins to fall apart.” I think this guy has quite a future ahead of him.

numskull

Artist extraordinaire Numskull has put up a timelapse of himself putting up an installation on the walls of Room4 in Sydney. The installation includes a neat looking Mickey/Donald hybrid and some vintage-horror inspired typography, and you can see it all in all its sped-up glory after the break.

LOTS OF WEED CHRISTMAS TREES
JOSH » 07.09.09 12:25PM

I’m not the hugest fan of reggae.  I’m not gonna hate if someone throws it on, and I’m fine with it being someone’s thing-its just not really mine.  However, that may need to change after looking through all these album covers, because some of them really covers really rock.  Some in an ironic way (The Massive Dread cover anyone) others legitimately (I’m sure I’ve seen Yellowman from his Nobody Move cover in NYC last year).  And who doesn’t want the type of christmas that Jacob Miller is delivering?

SPEAKING OF DALÍ
WILL » 07.07.09 06:04PM

dalidisney

While Dalí and greek olives might not go together, it would seem that Dalí and Disney go together just fine. Then again, the production time on Destino might suggest otherwise.

Originally started in 1945, this Dalí and Disney animation collaboration wasn’t completed until 2003. Yes, that’s right, 58 years of production for a 6 and a half minute film. To boot, the short was intended to be a piece of Fantasia 2006, a project that was killed just months before release, ensuring Destino would make the rounds solely as art-house fare. Despite 58 years of Disney production and the everlasting popularity of Dalí amongst the college stoner crowd, most people have never heard of it.

Transforming Dalí’s surreal work to a fluid and cohesive animation is ambitious to say the least, so I’ll leave it to you to determine if the end result was worth the wait.

FRIENDS, I PRESENT TO YOU JOSH KEYES.
JOSH » 07.06.09 01:57PM

home sprout2

Above an orca, refracted in the glass, sits a rabbit, and a flowering tree, standing in the wind.  The fin anchors into the tree, indisputably linking the two.  Or how about a pack of deer, their antlers aflame, standing amongst the burning carcass of a car.  Two contrasting images, but so irrefutably related to one another within a very controlled space.

In fact, Josh Keyes draws the perspective that limits his work.  You see no other context than what is presented, like a theater set.  This only serves to enhance what he paints.  I find myself unable to look away.  I can go on..and I will.

FABULIST VISIONS

alice_cup-

If you haven’t seen the concept images from Tim Burton for his upcoming version of Alice and Wonderland, you really need to take a look. They’re nothing short of amazing, fantastical, and spot on. At least they are as images. They make me nervous too – they’re setting pretty high expectations for the movie, and sadly in some of his recent films I don’t feel he has satisfied.

MY NEW HALLOWEEN COSTUME

superdeaux-mickey-mouse-540x384

Wow. I mean I always had respect for Disney in that they know how to make gobs and gobs of money, but this is edgy. The Superdeux x Disney collab is more S&M then Sleeping Beauty. Poor Mickey, its going to be a total pain to get that off the next morning.

Synth

Working together under the name Terri Timely, directors, Ian Kibbey and partner Corey Creasey, have outdone themselves with this one. Synesthesia, a recently finished short by the duo, is one of utter brilliance. Definitely poke around their site and check out some of their other commercial and music video work as well. These guys are pretty flippin’ talented.

PERFECT WEEKEND FOR A FILM
NICHOLE » 06.23.09 11:56AM

NotForgotten

A 48 hour film that is. A friend of mine, Celene Ramadan, and her integrator partner, Beau Gunderson, created an unbelievable entry for the 48 Hour Film Project, Seattle edition, titled, Not Forgotten. The challenge of the project is to simply shoot, edit and enter a film in a matter of 48 hours.

Lucky for them, they had one of the most amazing weekends to shoot. Between the Moore Theater’s, Inside Out event, and Ms. Kindra Meyer’s Menagerie Birthday Party, there were more actors/actresses/extras ready and willing to be a part of the magical film. And, I can’t forget to mention, the epic backdrops of the Beta Society Mansion, Moore Theater, and the Woodland Park Zoo’s Zoomanium, at their disposal.

YOU CAN SKIP THE PILLS
CHRIS » 06.20.09 04:02PM

etienne-de-crecy

As far a stage sets go, nothing really beats Daft Punk’s pyramid, but this (also geometry-based) set-up from dirty Frenchman Etienne De Crecy comes pretty close. I’ve never seen any stage set up that does so much with so little. If you look closely, you can see that the only lights on the rig are on the front, and that all of the three-dimensional visuals are based entirely on audience perspective. Beautiful piece of work.

Video after the break.
