Oh Adult Swim, we met in college and you continue to be my friend in adulthood, a gentle yoke around my neck preventing me from ever growing up.  You furthered my dependency with great web presence, collabs with Stone’s Throw, and producing DangerDoom.  Can I ever free myself from you?  Certainly not when you (and Beaterator) put out things like your ATL RMX tape featuring artists like HEALTH, Hudson Mohawke, and EL-P remixing Dirty South rappers like Gucci Mane, Young Jeezy, and Lil Jon.  No matter what, I’ll always come back to you Adult Swim, no matter what.  Now if you could only give me an iPhone interface.

pixeltan

Yes, yes, YES!  Pixeltan, the bass heavy, squealing lyric sound from New York City has finally dropped a new EP, after ten long years.  I can’t even post one of their new tracks yet (not on hype machine, not even on their myspace) but by God can I order their LP, and order their LP I did-about 30 seconds after receiving notice it was out.  DFA is a label that always has some stellar offerings and Pixeltan promises to live up to this grand tradition, which, by the way, is now officially 100 albums strong.  I’ll post music as soon as I can, but honestly, Pixeltan is a band that I will blindly order.  This promises to be good, no not good, amazing. Cover

I know it’s been a while since I’ve written about Savoy, but believe me, there have been plenty of other writers and bloggers out there doing it for me. Late last month, Savoy released their debut album Automatic at a sold out Fox Theater release party in Boulder. The album is insane. You can download it for free on Savoy’s website. These guys are selling out shows left and right all over Colorado, and getting crazy buzz on blogs like Hype Machine, Noise Porn, Trashbag Kids, and Kill Me Curious. I’m really excited to be doing work with these guys, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for them next year. All I know, is they better get their asses to Seattle.

amblingalp

Taking a page out of Ryan McGinley’s nudie playbook, Yeasayer has created a website for their single Ambling Alp that features naked people running. Instead of merely jocking McGinley’s style, Yeasayer’s website takes it one step further, allowing for user interactivity via yellowBird 3D video technology. So if you’ve ever dreamed of running sans pants in the music video for Gobbledigook, the time is now. Head over to Ambling Alp. And, while you’re at it, check out the new single by the same name.

contra-cover

Cousins is the latest track to pop-up from Vampire Weekend‘s upcoming release Contra. Foregoing the summer-island melodies of the first preview single, Horchata, this new track is fast-paced and noisy – familiar territory for fans of the first album. In fact, it feels almost like A-Punk mashed together with any number of Minutemen tracks off their seminal album Double Nickels On The Dime. Trust me, that’s a good thing. Listen to the track over at Hype Machine.

You probably remember Echo and the Bunnymen from the song ‘Lips Like Sugar’.  Thats their most successful single in the US, and it came out in 1987.  Or maybe you know ‘The Killing Moon,’ their second must successful US single, which came out in 1984.  Thats 25 years ago.  So you can understand why I was like ‘gwah!?!’ when I heard ‘Think I Need it Too,’ released in 2009, which shreds across a symphonic 3 and a half minute arc.  Its basically the best U2 song since ‘Walk On’.  I totally want to play this on RockBand.

Picture 1

In a cartoon-psychedelic world, there are a lot of crazy things. Like anthropomorphic balloons, creepy old men who like to kill balloons, crazy koalas, man animals, a cartoon incarnation of Dave Grohl with laser eyes, shrubs with faces, musical mold, men with snare drum heads, scary sloths, a tribe of elves, monster mosquitos, Johnny Depp with a sickle, bean bag children, lumberjacks with hypothermia, fat men that shoot rainbows and stars out of their stomachs, unicorns, guys who are into animals, sea creatures, break dancers, a flying bear superhero, an albino who likes to lick old ladies’ flowers, a bald guy with 3-D glasses that has a magical cup of stars, and a whole lot of really average rabbits.

Written & Directed by Ian Stevenson & Luke Seomore, illustrated by Ian Stevenson and brought to life by animator Alex Dobbin. Music by Graffiti 6.

This very NSFW video for Truckers Delight by Flairs might get you fired, but it would be well worth it. Think of it as the Lucasarts classic Full Throttle mixed with Don’t Stop the Beat from Junior Senior x Shynola, blended thoroughly with the raunchiest parts of Heavy Metal. Then serve it with a garnish of japanese cartoon porn. Trust me, it’s amazing. From the talented and un-Google-able Jérémie Perin. Video after the break. MORE »

Actually no.  That title is hella depressing when looking at this strikingly consistent (and hella depressing) portfolio.  I say striking because I’d be impressed if someone had a pic of just one albatross skeleton, let alone enough to make an entire series out of it and all the juicy trinkets they swallowed that wouldn’t decompose!  I understand that you may not want to click on the link based on that last sentence, but trust me, these photos are better than my wordsmithing.

Sometimes I worry I’m becoming to jaded.  Too focused on what’s new to appreciate what’s old, too concerned with what’s good to discover what i like.  Well here’s something I like.  I like Jan von Hollenben’s photos.  The innocence in her photographs Dreams of Flying collection, and the subtle sexiness in her Where we laughed collection.
Playing with the viewer’s perspective to create fantastical storyboards from children’s stories, real or imagined.  I’ll tell you why I like this, because this is what every parent should be doing with their kid.  Seriously, think of the imagination and creativity Jan is fostering in these kids by involving them in a project like this.  So what if there’s no edge, vulgarity, or irony here, this is something I would want to do with my kids.

At a distance, Monet’s paintings appear to be beautiful landscapes; up close, they are gestural splashes of color. At a distance, Jonathan Yeo’s collages are vibrant, stylized still-lifes and portraits; up close, his collages are titties, pussies, and cocks.

His pieces are fine examples of the old saying, “the medium is the message,” particularly his x-rated rendition of George W. Bush. The collage was originally commissioned by the Bush Library, but upon seeing the result, it was decided that his services would no longer be neccesary. Check out this video of the artist discussing his process and some more pieces after the break. MORE »

Founded by two nameless individuals wrapped up in the busy world of graphic design and fashion, The Infinite Now emerged with simplicity on the brain. Bringing to life the idea that the understated often carries more impact, the duo launched their brand last Friday with only two T’s in their collection. Makes sense. But to be honest the two designs are pretty rad and are enough to get The Infinite Now noticed. You can pick up Crypt or Veiled, or both, on their site for $25 a piece. MORE »

Imagine a Tenori-On that controlled Ableton, or a Monome with more features, or pretend for a moment God came down from heaven, walked into an electro club, and gave you the Ableton Novation Launchpad. It’s the second piece of dedicated, official Ableton hardware, and it looks like they nailed it. Oh, and by the way, it’s expected to cost $199 bundled with Ableton Live 8. Obviously I haven’t used one, but from the looks of the demo video, this little bastard is a full-featured, easy to use, tactile piece of equipment. Video after the break. MORE »

HLASKA

One of the struggles for the haute-hipster is the search for the right wallet. The quality and style imbued into Coach and Diesel products was upset by the social ideals behind them, and the free spirited, DIY, hipster spirit of Poketo and Dynomighty was mired by the flimsy and unsatisfying construction. After the demise of db clay, I believed there was nothing worth finding. Then I stumbled upon Hlaska.

With a focus on nature and science, as well as design and function, and only made with the finest European materials, Hlaska’s products truly capture the haute-hipster ideal: they have style, they have substance, and nobody knows about them. If you’re looking for wallets, bags, cufflinks, neckwear, and other classist wares, but want to retain your unique, indomitable fuck-you spirit, check out Hlaska. MORE »

File this one under bads, not goods. Seems like Taco Bell is introducing kids meals that come with a toy, just like every other fast food joint. Their unique offering? The decidedly un-unique Bellhedz, blind-box vinyl toys that are almost certainly direct rip offs of KidRobot’s Dunny series. Next thing you know they’ll be putting feather earrings, typographic screen-prints, and fixed gear bikes in their kids meals.

It’s really no different from McDonald’s TY Beanie Baby promo, but I can’t help but feel personally wronged. Your thoughts?

Have you ever thought “it would be great if there was a company that made large format wall stickers so I could decorate my walls without painting them?” Because I have. And because I’m such a loyal follower, the gods have seen fit to grant my wish!

Blik makes large format wall stickers so you can decorate your walls without painting them. They also make small ones. They also make custom ones, for the little designer inside you. Designer lines include officially licensed Nintendo wall graphics and a number of Upper Playground creations. They aren’t cheap, persé, but if you’re contractually obligated to suffer white walls for an entire year, it might be worth it. MORE »

This is why categories like ‘etc’ were invented.  A Jewish Mutha is a collection of actual voicemails from a very Jewish Mutha.  How do you categorize this?  Certainly not art, certainly not music, but most certainly good.  I recommend starting with ‘The Recipe’, ‘The Wires’, and my favorite ‘The Pea Pods’ to get a feel for what it could be like to be born of the chosen people.

Have you ever wanted to record your friends as they go off on a drunk and/or high rant.  Its always in retrospect, no one ever anticipates a great rant.  Well, no one except for Dan Deacon’s friends who decided one day to lock him in a closet while high on LSD, where he proceeded to go off on seahorses, balloon hands, and Captain Knots.  Its solid.  Dan Deacon is also coming to one of the coolest venues in Denver, Rhinoceropolis, on 10/27, which promises to be a very sweaty and loud show. I’m not big into video games, and I especially shy away from games like Guitar Hero that involve fake instruments. Something about a guitar-shaped controller just kind of irks me. I am, however, way into Daft Punk, which is why I have some serious mixed feelings about Activision’s new DJ Hero, due out October 27th. The very existence of this game was bound to happen, but what surprised me is the inclusion of Daft Punk in the game and the promotion.
